Food Art: Watermelon Pizza
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s… a watermelon? Here’s a fun and simple snack idea that everyone will love: a build-your-own watermelon pizza! Of course, it only looks like pizza! This cute snack is really made of fruit and Kix cereal. And the best part? Everyone gets to customize the perfect pizza with mouthwatering toppings.
Since summer is nearly here, some of your favorite fruits are in season, so load up your watermelon pizza with berries, grapes (disguised like olives), and of course, Kix cereal.
What You Need:
- A mini watermelon
- Black seedless grapes
- Flaked coconut
- Kix cereal
- Assorted berries
- Yogurt
- Raspberry or strawberry jam
- Other toppings as desired, such as raisins, pineapple, bananas, etc.
- A drinking straw
Assembling the Build Your Own Pizza Bar:
1. Parents only: Slice watermelon into round slices. We used a mini watermelon to make “personal pizzas.”
2. Parents only: Slice fruits into smaller pieces.
- Strawberries can be sliced across the strawberry to make round slices reminiscent of pepperoni.
- Pineapple can be sliced into small wedges for a “Hawaiian pizza” look.
- Slice grapes and punch a hole in the middle of each slice with a drinking straw to make “olives.”
3. Put sliced fruit, shredded coconut, Kix cereal, and other ingredients in bowls on the table.
4. Give each person a round slice of watermelon on a plate.
Spread jam or yogurt on the pizza to serve as pizza sauce. Coconut shreds look like cheese. Then load up the watermelon like a fruit pizza supreme!
My boys loved this activity! Kids will enjoy building their own pizza, and decorating it just how they like it. After the pizza is finished, don’t forget to slice it in four or six pieces so it really looks like pizza (and is easy to eat).
Parents only: slicing with a pizza cutter really works!
Enjoy your pizza!
