Kid Science: Egg Geodes

Creating colorful egg geodes teaches sedimentation and crystallization–and sparks a love for science and learning! The alum powder on the egg gives the alum particles in the water a place to attach themselves as they crystallize.

The steps:

1. Start with clean, empty eggshell halves. Add glue and spread evenly with a paintbrush.

2. Coat the inside of each eggshell with a generous amount of alum powder (found in the spice isle of your grocery store or online).

3. Add food coloring and ¾ cup alum powder to 2 cups hot water.

4. Stir until dissolved

5. Gently place eggs in the solution

6. Let sit for 24 hours (or more). Remove eggs and allow to dry

7. Check out how light reflects off of the crystals
