Noise Maker for Purim

Purim is a Jewish festival that is held in early spring and is often celebrated with masks, costumes and public celebration. It is tradition to bring along a noise maker like a grogger, or a homemade noise maker like ours, to use during the reading of the story from the Book of Esther. This noise maker craft is an easy project for your kids to do and use as part of the celebration.

There are no traditional colors associated with Purim, though many children use purple, which represents royalty, to decorate their noise makers.

To make this noise maker you will need:

2 foam coffee cups
Purple duct tape
Patterned duct tape
Handful of dried beans
Cutting mat
Craft knife

Note: A cutting mat is not required, though it makes working with duct tape a lot easier. A craft knife is also not required but makes cutting tape a breeze compared to scissors which can stick to the tape.

Put the beans into one of the cups.

Place the second cup on top of the first cup, rim to rim. Tape the rims together with purple tape.

Place a square of purple tape on the bottoms of each cup.

Cover the cups completely with purple tape. Cut patterned tape into strips to add stripes to your noise maker.
