Duct Tape Mardi Gras Mask

Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is known for its colorful celebrations prior to Ash Wednesday when Lent begins. Mardi Gras is known for all of its beautiful colors, but traditional colors are green for faith, purple for justice and gold for power. It’s become a popular tradition to don a colorful and festive mast during Mardi Gras celebrations, and let’s face it, they’re fun! So let’s make this easy mask from duct tape, and remember you can embellish with whatever you have on hand.

To make this mask you will need:

Duct tape: green, yellow and purple (gold is available but is more expensive than yellow)
1 jumbo craft stick
Green and gold sequins and/or craft jewels
White craft glue
Scissors
Cutting mat (optional)
Craft knife (optional)

If you think you might want to make more duct tape crafts, you may want to pick up a cutting mat and a craft knife. It makes it so much easier to measure and cut the tape, but this project can still be made without one.

Begin by measuring out a 12-inch strip of purple tape. Connect a second 12-inch strip of purple tape along the top of the first so that they overlap slightly. Lift them up off of the cutting mat and fold the sheet in half, sticky sides touching. Trim edges.

Fold the double-sided tape sheet in half and cut out an almond shape for the eye holes. When you unfold it there should be two. Fold again and trim the straight edges off if you want your mask rounded.

Measure and cut an 8-inch piece of green duct tape. Fold it in half, leaving a small amount of sticky side showing. Cut that piece in half lengthwise. You should have two 4-inch long pieces with a small strip of sticky tape showing. Attach to the back of the mask toward the top left and use scissors to cut a three pointed strips as pictured. Repeat on the other side. Repeat this process with one more strip of green tape to do the bottom sides of the mask. Use white craft glue to decorate the front of the mask with sequins.

Cover the jumbo craft stick with yellow duct tape and decorate with sequins. Glue it to the back of right side the mask. If child is left handed, glue it to the back left side of the mask.
