Family Memory Cards

This fun memory card activity can be kept simple as construction paper cards like I’ve made, or make them a bit sturdier by using card stock. Go so far as to use magnetic sheets, and this game turns into functioning refrigerator accessories. Use this game to help younger children match not only their colors, but match up their relatives with each other or with their favorite things. You can draw pictures like I have, or use family photos instead.

You will need:

Construction paper in various colors
Colored pencils
White construction or drawing paper
Glue stick
Scissors

Have kids use colored pencils to draw family members, as well as objects that are associated with those family members. For example, if big brother likes to shoot hoops, a basketball is a great object to match him up with. Little sister may be in to dolls while thoughts of Grandma might conjure up a plate of cookies! Anything that may associate a person with another person or something that reminds your child of them.

Cut the pictures out into squares and use a glue stick to attach them to the construction paper. Use colors for matching purposes too. So if you put Grandma on orange paper, put any people or objects that are associated with Grandma also on orange (i.e. Grandpa, a plate of cookies, etc). Do the same for the other family members and cut them out, making sure each one has a visible color border.

Place the cards on the table so that they are not matched up and ask your child to match them up by color, person or object. It’s a fun way for the younger set to remember distant family members too!
