Monster Felt Board Book

Felt boards are a lot of fun for kids to play with. It’s a great way to foster their imagination and keep them thinking creatively. With this board they can make all different sorts of monsters by switching out eyes, mouths and eyebrows! When they are all done, store the pieces in a zip top plastic bag and fold the book for easier storage.

To make this book you will need:

1 empty Kix cereal box
4 sheets of tan felt
Felt in various colors (such as blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, etc), plus black and white
2 black pipe cleaners
Scissors
White craft glue

Cut the cereal boxes so that you end up with the front and back of the box only. Glue tan felt to both sides of the two cereal box pieces. Trim where needed, making sure that both pieces are approximately the same size.

You can use different colors of felt if you like. For mine, I used a darker tan on one side, and a lighter tan on the other.

To bind the book together, a parent can poke three holes about an inch from the edge by twisting the point of the scissors back and forth to create a small circle. Make three holes, making sure they all line up.

Cut the pipe cleaners in half, you will use three and can save the fourth for another project. Run a pipe cleaner through the holes of both the front and back cover to create the binding. Be careful not to twist too tight or the book will not open. It’s best to insert the pipe cleaners, open the book and then twist them closed.

Cut different shapes from the colored felt such as a square, triangle, rectangle, circle, oval and a curvy blob looking shape! Make eyeballs by cutting circles from white felt in different sizes. Cut smaller black circles and glue them to the white circles. Create eyebrows by simply cutting strips in different widths. Mouths can be made by cutting black shapes (such as rectangles and half circles) and gluing white felt on for teeth.

When everything has dried the kids can play! Here are some examples of different faces they can make just by moving the eyes and mouths around.

Eyes can be turned so they look goofy or look like they are looking up, down or to the side.
