Food Art: Fruit Tree with Kix Garland
Already done decorating your holiday tree? Here’s a little more decorating fun you and your child can do together using this Pillsbury Crescent Fruit Tree recipe, fresh fruit and Kix cereal as delicious ornaments.
How To Make
Gather your ingredients:
1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations® refrigerated seamless dough sheet
1 container (8 oz) cream cheese with strawberries
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
3-4 fresh strawberries, sliced into rounds
2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
1 orange, peeled and sliced, one slice cut into a star shape, remaining slices quartered
6 (¼ x 4 ¾”) strips of fruit leather (cut from 1 piece Simply Fruit Strawberry Roll)
1/3 cup Kix
Take your dinner rolls or the dough sheet, and remove from the can but leave rolled up. Cut into 16 slices.
Arrange the slices on an ungreased cookie sheet into the shape of a tree.
Bake according to package directions, then let cool.
While your tree is cooling, mix cream cheese and powdered sugar in a small bowl.
Spread the frosting on the tree but reserve 1 tablespoon.
Start arranging your colorful slices of fruit onto the tree to create bright, fresh “ornaments.”
Top off the tree with a slice of starfruit (of course!).
Use the strips of fruit leather as a garland wrapped back and forth across your tree.
Dip individual pieces of Kix cereal into the remaining cream cheese mixture, and add to the fruit leather garland.
The individual circles make it a cinch to serve up at parties, making it a huge hit at holiday potlucks!
Here’s the recipe all in one place:
Crescent Fruit Tree with Kix Garland
Prep time: 30 minutes
Start to finish: 1 hour
1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations® refrigerated seamless dough sheet
1 container (8 oz) cream cheese with strawberries
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
3-4 fresh strawberries, sliced into rounds
2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
1 orange, peeled and sliced, one slice cut into a star shape, remaining slices quartered
6 (¼ x 4 ¾”) strips of fruit leather (cut from 1 piece Simply Fruit Strawberry Roll)
1/3 cup Kix
Heat oven to 375°F.
If using crescent rolls: Remove dough from can in 2 rolled sections; do not unroll. Cut each section into 8 slices. If using dough sheet: Remove dough from can; do not unroll. Cut into 16 slices.
Place slices, cut side down, on ungreased cookie sheet to form tree. To form tree, start by placing 1 slice for top; arrange 2 slices just below, with sides touching. Continue arranging a row of 3 slices, then a row of 4 slices, and ending with a row of 5 slices. Use remaining slice for tree trunk.
Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet. Carefully loosen with spatula; slide onto cooling rack. Cool 10 minutes.
Place tree on serving platter or tray. In small bowl, mix cream cheese and powdered sugar; blend well. Spread mixture over tree, reserving 1 tablespoon. Decorate tree with kiwi, then strawberries and finally oranges, placing the star-shaped orange on the top of the tree.
Drape the strips across the tree, then dip Kix in the remaining cream cheese mixture and place on top of the strips, to form a garland.
